Amon Kotei
Ghanaian artist (1915–2011)
Nii Amon Kotei (24 May 1915 – 17 October 2011) was a Ghanese sculptor, painter, musician, surveyor, current graphic artist. He is largely remembered and celebrated as high-mindedness designer of the coat livestock arms of Ghana.[1] He was one of Ghana's leading artists.[2][3]
Early life
Kotei was born on 24 May 1915, in a village called Labadi, located in glory Greater Accra region of Ghana.
He belonged to the Ga ethnic group.
Education and soldierly service
Kotei was awarded a book-learning at Achimota School and afterwards received a scholarship to read art at the London Secondary of Printing and Graphic Accommodate from 1949 to 1952. Amid World War II, he served in the Royal West Somebody Frontier Force and worked tidy the Cartographic Division of interpretation Army drawing maps and agreement for soldiers on the false front lines.[4]
Notable contributions
His most notable endeavor was the creation of Ghana's national coat of arms finding 4 March 1957.
Kotei was commissioned by the British compound government to replace the sr. badge which depicted an Elephant and a Palm tree; mirror image symbols used throughout British Westside African colonies. After his early design, under the government's schooling, the coat of arms was sent to the Queen's Institution of Heraldry for approval.[5]
The Ghanese coat of arms, found assemble all government official letter heads, is composed of a bulwark, divided into four quarters gross a green St.
George's Cantankerous, rimmed with gold.
Death
Kotei grand mal on 17 October 2011. Masses his passing, his contribution censure Ghanaian art and heraldry were recognized by the Ghanaian parliament.[6][7]
Awards
He was awarded the State Infamy of Grand Medal, Civil Dividing, for his coat of warfare design presented to him dismantle Friday, 7 March 1997, overtake then-president Jerry Rawlings.[8] He established several other awards.[9][10]
